The fish who draws in sand

A pufferfish the length of a pencil spends a week carving a two-meter geometric circle into the seabed. Then the tide erases it, and he begins another.

A mystery on the seabed

Off Amami Ōshima, in the Ryukyu Islands, divers began noticing circles on the sand about two meters wide. Perfectly radial. Ridges and valleys spoking out from a smooth center, sometimes trimmed with broken shell. They were beautiful, and they were unsigned. For nearly two decades no one knew what made them, so the divers simply called them mystery circles.

The architect, caught on film

Marine biologist Hiroshi Kawase and colleagues finally filmed the builder at work: a single male pufferfish, barely twelve centimeters long, ploughing the pattern with his own body. In 2014 the species was formally described and named Torquigener albomaculosus -- the white-spotted pufferfish. Albomaculosus is just Latin for the pale flecks on its skin. Nothing about the name hints at what it can do.

How he builds it

He works almost without rest for seven to nine days. Swimming in toward the center, he flutters his fins against the bottom to plough valleys and heap up ridges, circling and correcting until roughly two dozen spokes radiate out in near-symmetry.

Then he does something stranger. He gathers the finest grains of sand and carries them to the middle, and decorates the valleys with fragments of shell and coral. He is not just digging a nest. He is finishing it.

The geometry is doing a job

The ridges are not only ornament. Measured in a flume, those radiating peaks break the bottom current and funnel the finest sediment inward, gathering a soft bed of fine sand at the very center. It is the calmest, softest spot for hundreds of meters -- engineered, by a fish, out of nothing but sand and patience.

She inspects the work

A female arrives and swims the pattern, reading it. The number of ridges, the fineness of the central sand, the trim of shell -- these appear to be exactly what she is judging. If the work passes, she lays her eggs in the fine bed at the center, and he fertilizes and guards them.

Then the ridges, untended, begin to soften back into flat seabed.

He never reuses it

For the next mating, he does not repair the old circle. He finds fresh sand and starts over -- another week, another two meters, another pattern the sea will eventually take back. A lifetime of drawings, each one temporary by design.
